Vlisco wax print fabric
Creative Entrepeneurship

Happy Sunday makers! I’m enjoying a Sunday afternoon inside, drinking tea and preparing to draft a slip dress for an upcoming wedding; I’m planning to finally use some gorgeous coral silk I’ve had in my stash for years. Speaking of the stash…. I had to clean it out this week to make room for some recent hauls. A haute couture fabric store in Westmount is going out of business this year and I scored a bunch of gorgeous silk and wool remnants for a song (go to Minks on Green Avenue if you’d like to do the same – thanks to Prue for emailing me about it!) Additionally, Monserratt, Vicki and I went in on an African wax print order from Vlisco. With the Euro exchange and customs it ended up being substantially more than we anticipated but I’m super excited to make a few dresses and a quilt out of my beauties. The Vlisco website is a blessing and a curse; it’s the best designed online fabric store I’ve ever seen but the stock is all limited quantity and sells out so quickly it can be dangerous to visit too often (please please please someone get this crazy sewing machine print).

Lets see what the sewing blogosphere was up to this week….

Quite charmed by this little black jacket over on Jolies Bobines.

Another art teacher win from Cassie Stevens: a Monet print dress!

More Monet vibes: a neon water lily dress from Honig Designs.

I really liked how cool and structured this dress was from Kristy at Top Notch, especially since the pattern she used called for much drapier fabric.

No man has ever looked better in floral on floral than Peter did this week.

Needle for Your Thoughts marble dyed denim for her Ginger jeans; they are wicked cool.

Sallie Oh posted her tester version of the Sallie maxi dress pattern. *Hearts for eyes emoji*

I need to refer to this tutorial for using iron-on images for baby leggings from Oliver and S; I’m in the middle of a veritable baby boom over here. Seriously. Everyone is pregnant. Everyone.

Did you catch this interview on Ginger Makes with knitwear designer O! Jolly? I’m so inspired by her career path! And her sweater knits (available to home sewists!) are gorgeous.

I’ve been waiting to hear more about the new Design Sponge book and Grace Boneey finally revealed the concept – she’ll be interviewing prominent creative women in their workspaces and sharing their advice, wisdom and inspiration. So. Stoked.

How cool are these industrially designed fabrics over on The Cutting Class?

I had a #treatyoself moment when I bought a Ninja blender on sale this week; it’s essentially like a fancy Vitamix but about half the price. I know I am prone to hyperbole, but this thing has increased my morning moods by about 300% and I’m a little mad at myself for not having gotten one sooner. It’s insanely satisfying to get 3-4 servings of fruit or veg in one delicious icy cup and I’m having fun playing around with ingredients. New faves: 1) Pineapple, grapefruit juice, yoghurt, strawberries and mint, 2) Dates, frozen banana and almond milk and 3) Mango, frozen pineapple, kefir, coconut water.

I just did an interview on the Reyna Lay Podcast if you’d like to hear about how I got started designing patterns and the future of my business, among other things.
