THIS WEEK IN SEWING BLOGS // VOL. 98

H appy Sunday everyone. I am currently sitting in my home studio, one of the few rooms in my apartment that doesn’t stink like smoke and melted plastic (the same cannot be said of my laundry room or kitchen). While I was on holiday there was an electrical fire in the basement of my building. Since I’m on the third floor I only suffered mild smoke damage (don’t worry, the patterns are okay!), but it’s bad enough that I can’t sleep here for the next month or so, or however long it takes for them to demo the fire damaged areas downstairs and then professionally clean my place (they can’t clean until the demo is done since all the odours will just waft up once they break out the sledgehammers). Needless to say its a huge bummer, and I had a mild anxiety attack when the insurance company’s drycleaners arrived to haul off all of my handmade clothes and gigantic fabric stash. I’m living out of my European vacation suitcase so at least all of my current favourite dresses are with me. Small favours. Speaking of….

Public service announcement: get rental insurance! I am so glad I started with it last year since the cleaning of my apartment alone will cost almost $15,000. My first floor neighbors lost everything and it’s tragic. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Here’s what you folks have been up to.

ADMIRE

Becca is a genius; she hacked the Sallie jumpsuit into this multiway beauty – I am definitely going to try this!

This dress just makes you want to holler YAS QUEEN.

Love this graphic ponte dress made from a 30’s pattern; great mix of modern and vintage from Fadanista!

Did you see the new pattern release from True Bias? I have a few mixed yards of 4 ply crepe that will be made into Ogden camis just as soon as I get my fabric stash back from the cleaners!

This Boylston bra from Miss Make is SO. DAMN. PRETTY.

Really into the deep green of this dress from What Katie Sews.

Wax print skirt! Why didn’t I think of that?

This striped dress from Petit Main Sauvage is beyond excellent.

More wonderful Sophies from my testers! I love Sue’s tankini hack, and Novita made a very cute version with a lower waisted bottom.

Jasika is a peaches n’ cream Barbie (in a good way).

AWESOME

Love this new online service, Stitch; it lets you list yourself if you’d like to hire out your sewing/tailoring/mending skills. Super cool idea; I’d love to be able to refer people here when they ask me to sew things for them.

Accessorize your swimsuit!

A free zero waste top pattern from Joost at Make My Pattern!

SUMMER READS

Devoured so many books over my vacation. My top pick is Shrill by Lindy West. Such a smart, hilarious book that will challenge your ideas about size and weight in our culture. I also gulped down the latest mystery series written by JK Rowling under the pseudonym Robert Gailbrath; she’s so masterful with plot. Perfect hammock reading.

I am so so so sorry to hear about the horrible fire in the basement, and I can only imagine how frustrating and anxiety-invoking this whole process is for you. The smoke smell must be out of this world! But so glad you are able to see the tiny silver linings. I wish you much strength and patience in moving forward and I hope that everything else is smooth sailing from here on out. Also, bless you for managing to post a What’s Doin in the midst of this turmoil. Also, thanks so much (as always) for including one of my makes 🙂 U THE BEST, GIRL!

Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the fire and your inconvenient living arrangements for now. As always, thank you for the blog review and the “awesome” section.

  • I am trying to read Shrill. It’s right there, autographed, waiting. But there’s so much sewing to do…..and pattern drafting for teen person that is supposed to be done tomorrow……and a job. And that family.
Give me a 28 hour day. 8 hours of sleep and 20 of getting stuff made.

  • Fadanista

You are so sweet for mentioning my dress – thank you! I can’t imagine having all my clothes and fabric hauled off to the dry cleaners, so I hope they all come back soon.

  • I’m so sorry to hear about your fire, and even more sorry for your downstairs neighbors. I’m glad you have renter’s insurance! Thank you for posting amidst the stress and mayhem. I really enjoy these posts. Maybe you should go on another little vacay until your cleaning is complete…
