Styling Inspo for the Sienna Maker Jacket

Hey all! Amy here. Today I am sharing with you our journey to the Sienna Maker Jacket pattern. I will show you our initial inspiration from vintage sources and ready to wear shops and walk you through the pattern details. So without further ado, let’s open the archives!

VINTAGE

We first noticed a real workwear trend last fall when Heather came back from Europe and announced that everyone was wearing a boiler suit! Coveralls, jumpsuits, chore jackets and all sorts of mechanics aprons were trickling into the main stream and we were here for all that contrast topstitching! Both Heather and I are huge fans of Bill Cunningham and had watched the documentary  and read the book and were more than aware of his iconic blue French sanitary worker jacket that he bought for a few Euros in Paris and replaced regularly. The idea that someone who worked in fashion, taking the most iconic fashionista street photography while wearing the jacket of a garbage man (and looked chic doing it!) was captivating to us. We were in. How could we translate this spirit of functionality, style and history? We did a lot of research. The sources below are some of what we delved into, and we finally settled on View A and B being a wrap jacket. It has the appeal of a lab coat/ mechanic’s jacket/ and housecoat all in one! What could be more cozy yet practical for making whatever it is you make??

RTW

Our second source of inspiration was RTW. There were all sorts of army/chore/jean jackets on the market and we were trying to distill that spirit into a third view (we’re ambitious like that!) and so Celine came up with a swingy cropped version that has all kinds of fun details to trick it out. The pocket in the sleeve and back (functional) button up vent make this view more than just an afterthought. We are really happy with how different this view is and yet how it still fits within the inspiration of functionality and workwear. Made up in denim it has all the appeal of a simple jean jacket but takes on an army surplus or equestrian vibe in a olive green twill.
