Our Sewing Patterns, Sewing Projects

My First Fiona Sundress (in Stonewashed Denim!)

Boy oh boy do I have some projects backed up! Sometimes I feel like I can never find time to sew for myself, but I’ve been on a relative tear this summer, sewing up a pretty great summer wardrobe. As always the problem is finding time to take photos, which was challenging up until a few weeks ago. It was as sweaty as a 70s discotheque up in here, not exactly conducive for taking some “Oh look how breezy I am!” snaps while red-faced and visibly perspiring. One day Amy and I actually resorted to working in our sports bras until I realized I needed to take some drastic action lest we scandalize our UPS delivery person (drastic action being caving for an air conditioner and UV blocking blinds, which has unsurprisingly been a heaven-sent miracle).

We ventured outside our air-conditioned haven last week to finally document my first Fiona Sundress. I made this number just before we sent it out for testing, and while there were quite a few subtle changes to the pattern, I’ve worn this quite a lot this summer, issues notwithstanding.

The fabric is a lovely midweight stonewashed/bleached Kaufman denim. It’s a  colour that is surprisingly hard to find when you’re denim shopping, but they have lots in stock here. At about 10oz, it creates a nice, structured silhouette, although I probably should have cut the facings from a  lighter weight cotton since it added a lot of bulk.

After I made this dress we raised the waist seam slightly and fixed the darts since they weren’t matching at the seam lines. Later on we ended up dropping the apex of the bust as well; nothing major, but it was a good reminder for me to carve out time to make myself samples in my size even before we get to testing; I always change a lot of things after test driving.

My main beef with this dress is the snaps. I used the same spring snaps we include in our Kelly Anorak kit, but because there isn’t a ton of wearing ease they have a tendency to pop open when I bend over too suddenly. This isn’t an issue with something looser fitting like a jacket, but this dress requires a stronger grip if you go the snap route. As a result of my wearing experiment, we decided to offer a special Fiona kit with heavy-duty snaps; we’re just waiting for everything to arrive from our supplier and it should be in our shop within a few weeks. In the meantime, I’m going to sew a few hook and eyes at the tension points to help keep everything in place.

I have one more Fiona to share with you, which I might like even more – it’s a gorgeous olive green linen and is so perfect for the summer heat.  I’m also working on a hacked version with no button band but I’ve had it to put it aside to work on our next pattern; I’m hoping I can finish it this week.

Are you into this stonewashed denim or does it give you Guess Jeans 80s flashbacks?
