Kalle Shirt + Dress Sewalong Schedule

Hey y’all! We have a sewalong planned for our latest pattern, the Kalle Shirt + Shirtdress. There are lots of fun details and construction methods we use in this design so I thought it was worthy of exploring them in more depth. I know sewalongs can get really tedious for those of you who aren’t making the pattern, but I’m hoping you’ll find something useful since we’ll be showing a variety of shirtmaking techniques that you can use for future sewing.

The schedule is as follows (this is tentative but I’ll do my best to stick to it):

WEEK ONE – INSPIRATION AND PREP

Monday, May 8 – Inspiration & Styling

Wednesday, May 10 – Fabric selection

Friday, May 12 – Choosing a size & Common Fit Adjustments (including an FBA)

WEEK TWO – PLACKET WEEK

Monday, May 15 – Sewing a Standard Button Placket

Wednesday, May 17 – Sewing a Hidden Button Placket

Friday, May 19 – Sewing a Popover/tunic Placket

WEEK THREE – CONSTRUCTION WEEK

Monday, May 22 – Sewing a Curved Patch Pocket

Tuesday, May 23 – Assembling Yoke

Wednesday, May 24 – View B & C – Side Seams + Bias Hem

GET THE KALLE PATTERN & SEWALONG

  • Ann T.

I am thrilled that you are offering a sewalong. I love the Kalle pattern, and bought and printed my copy the first day you offered it. However, upon reviewing the instructions, I realized it calls for many techniques with which I am unfamiliar. Your pajama sewalong was clear and well-illustrated, so I had no trouble following along, and I know this one will be the same. Hooray and Thank You!!!

  • This is good news! I was hoping you were going to do this too with the Kalle – love the pattern Heather Lou 🙂

  • Nichole Talbot

Excited for the sewalong! I can’t find the finished garment measurements in my printed pattern. Am I missing something?

    • It’s on page 2 of the booklet (had a panic minute there!)

      • Nichole Talbot

Found them! A couple pages of my instruction booklet were stuck together a bit. Sorry for the panic attack!

  • Really excited for the sewalong! I’ve made a few shirts before, but always struggle with plackets (tend to avoid them!). Also looking forward to the bit about FBA as I always need one of these. Had the perfect fabric stashed for ages and can’t wait to make View B 🙂

i was keen to see this pattern release, and then when i saw the placket detail I couldn’t wait to see how you would explain it – i always find that i can eventually sew them but I can never retain quite how i actually sewed one up! Genuinely enjoy your succinct and clear instructions. Think i will be getting stuck into this sew-a-long too. I’ve never done one before, this is my time!

  • Susanna Prince

Love this pattern! Wondering if there is a good forward shoulder adjustment for this style of kimono sleeve included in the sew-a-long fit adjustments? I am having no luck yet coming up with one that works. Got everything else working, though–such a nice pattern. Can’t wait to get past the muslin stage(s) and looking forward to the sew-a-long!

If I wanted to make this in a semi-sheer fabric, how would you recommend lining it?
I’m tempted to just underline and treat both layers as one.

    • Hi Christine. That could work, but I’d be nervous about the hem treatment. I think you may have to finish them separately to avoid puckers. Or you could wear a pretty slip under the dress 🙂

      • Christine Griffin

Good point on the hem. I think I’ll make slips!
