Hacking the Fiona Sundress Pattern

Sometimes when looking for sewspo you don’t need to go very far. As I was perusing the hashtag for our Fiona Sundress pattern I was noticing a trend: this thing has been hacked into just about everything! A top, a skirt, overalls, a pinafore, a longer dress, a crop top… holy moly! Is there a Fiona Sundress Parka?? Some of these amazing sewists wrote blog posts (I’ll include them below if they did) but otherwise this is just a quick little round up of some very cute spring looks that you too can achieve with the Fiona pattern and some imagination…

INTO A TOP

Loni here was inspired by the Anthropology top  (on the bottom right) and made the top half of the dress and eliminated the waistband.

Tessa made the pink linen top and the double denim (from thrifted jeans!) up top and Country Maverickess made this streamlined green version from a rayon/linen blend.

INTO A SKIRT

Paula said of her skirt in her instagram post: “I used the selvedge for the center front edges, long side of the front pockets, and top edge of the back pockets. I left the hem raw, but staystitched 3/8” from the edge so fraying doesn’t get too crazy.”

Patterning Details:

  • turned back darts into princess seams
  • extended side seams at hemline 1” so it’s not quite straight, but not quite A-line
  • made a fake ‘waistband’ by drafting facings but sewing them on the outside
  • chopped off the bottom corner of the front pockets for no reason other than I liked the look
  • added two Ginger Jeans back pockets
  • drafted and interfaced a facing for front plackets to make it sturdy enough for snaps.”

ZIPPER INSTEAD OF BUTTONS

Jo wrote a great blog post about how she eliminated all the buttons on Fiona and added an exposed zipper. Loving the toughness of the corduroy with the pretty princess seams!

FULLER SKIRT

These two sewists had the same great idea. Above, Vanessa showed us how she went from imagined sketch to finished garment. Here from her instagram post she gives us the deets: “This a self draft/pattern hack concoction. The bodice is the Fiona Sundress from Closet Case Patterns. I added length to the bodice, straightened the side seams and added a bit of ease all around for loose fit through the torso but kept the band fitted. Skirt is a self drafted half circle skirt with button placket to match the bodice…. from idea to wearable garment!”

Below, Bella made this self drafted circle skirt (attached to the Fiona top) OUT OF A SHEET! Love all the play with the stripes!

JENNY/ FIONA MASH UP

The only thing we love more than a pattern hack over here is when you mash two of our patterns together. Both Laura and Mary Lou had the genius idea of combining the Jenny overalls bib with the Fiona skirt. By the looks of things they eliminated the front placket of Fiona and added hip buttons. So cute!

CROP TOP

Finally, Damar Studio made this adorable crop top out of an old pair of pants. She eliminated the front placket and added a zipper to get in and out of it. Such beautiful workmanship!

We love seeing all your creative uses for this pattern. Please use the hashtag #fionasundress to share your makes with us!
