Fabric Options for the Charlie Caftan Pattern

Hey there! Today I want to talk fabric for our new Charlie Caftan Pattern. Thankfully you have a lot of options to choose from. The shorter versions (particularly the pleated view) hold up well with fabrics with a little body and substance. I love the mini in medium weight linen, double gauze and cottons like chambray and voile. I think the maxi looks best with a little drape and swish, so I recommend soft, fluid fabrics like silk (chiffon, charmeuse, noil or crepe will work), rayon challis and tencel. Cotton and linen can work as well, but I would try to stick to lighter-weight options so the skirt doesn’t feel too stiff.

I had a lot of fun choosing fabrics for our samples. In the end I managed to use our studio stash for almost everything (that almost never happens!) but I did spend a lot of time online looking for viable options. In keeping with with the styling suggestions I made last week, here are some favourites.

What are you planning to use to make your Charlie?

  • Caroline

    Hello and goodbye, my paycheck!

    • Ah haha, I feel like that whenever I’m in a fabric store.

  • Lisa

    So many good options!!!

  • Gorgeous stuff!!

  • I picked a repetitive pattern that ended up a bit busy for me on such a big scale even though I made the mini version. But I’m super persnickety, veering towards monochromatic with a flash of color. Glad this was my “test” run. Love many of these options!

Also, what is it about fabric shopping? I see something and absolutely fall in love with it, only to bring it home and realize that it isn’t my style at all. I can’t be the only one with this issue…..

    • I do this ALL the time. I’ve gotten better at it; I know which types of prints I’ll wear (graphic, large scale) and that I mostly prefer neutrals or a few key colours. I’ve made too many things I never wear, I’ve learned my lesson 😉

      • I did better this week. I think it helped that I was doing it at an actual store rather than online. Maybe I’ll eventually learn the lesson completely!
