2016 Sewing Patterns from Closet Case Patterns

I always feel reflective this time of year. It’s kind of mandatory when you own a business; it’s important to look back and take stock in order to thoughtfully plan for the future. I’ve been semi-frantically trying to tie up the loose ends of 2016 while also being deeply immersed in a few big projects, so I was happy to hit pause on all that busy work today and focus on what we actually did this year. Here are some highlights.

2016 Sewing Patterns from Closet Case Patterns

This year we released 3 full patterns; the Morgan Boyfriend Jeans, the Sophie Swimsuit and the Kelly Anorak. We also created a Flared Jeans expansion for our best selling Ginger pattern. Each release has exceeded my expectations and proven to me that there is a market for patterns outside the easy/beginner market; while we have a few simpler ideas in the works (I like a fast make as much as the next person!), I am looking forward to continue exploring more challenging ideas. Thank you for all your wonderful feedback and support this year; I really jump out bed each morning excited to see what you guys are cooking up with our resources.

This summer I made my first foray into online education withe the Sew  Your Dream Swimsuit workshop and absolutely loved the experience. It really gives me the chance to nerd out in more depth than a sewalong, and I think videos are a lot more pleasant to follow for many of you. I have a few new workshops coming to you next year that I am really excited about, but I’ll continue to host sewalongs and lots of tutorials here on the blog.

Speaking of tutorials….

This year I tried to focus on bringing you guys lots of relevant, helpful content for your sewing practice. Here are some of the most popular posts:

We also created a few freebies this year; a long line pattern bonus for the Sophie Swimsuit, and 33 back pocket jean designs for our newsletter subscribers.

Favourite sewing projects from 2016 // Closet Case Patterns

I managed to squeeze in as much personal sewing time as possible; even when I’m doing a lot of sample making for work, it’s important for me to still stay connected to my sewing practice. It’s the best cure for stress and anxiety. My favourite projects:

I can’t wait till its warm enough to wear this floral and chambray Hannah dress again. This caftan makes me want to start a cult. The ultimate raincoat and the coat of my dreams. This self-drafted dress wins the prize for “worn most often in 2016”.

I have one more post before the year is up, but in the meantime I hope you have a wonderful holiday, whatever you are celebrating. G and I are flying home to Windsor with Harry (Athena is staying with a friend) and I can’t wait to shock and awe him with my mother’s insane Christmas decorating and the carbo loading that is Christmas dinner in Canada. Love to you all!

  • Bec

Love your work! Don’t go changing. 🙂

    • Thank you Bec! I did just stupidly cut off all my hair but I’m sure that’s not what you meant 😉

  • Another fantastic year! All your patterns have been beautiful and inspiring, and I always appreciate the hard work you put into your posts about fitting and techniques. Have a great Christmas!!!

    • Thank you Gillian! Hope you have a super restive (student free) holiday filled with lots of sewing. xoxo

  • Chloe Anderson

Merry Christmas Heather! I love your aesthetic, and your tutorials are fantastic. This list just reminded me of how many I have pinned or saved, they are such a great resource. Thank you! Have a great holiday, enjoy all the carbs!

    • Thank you Chloe! That’s so nice to hear you find this stuff valuable and I’m not yelling into the void 😉

  • Merry Christmas Heather! What an amazing year you’ve had. I love your work! You are such an inspiration to me. I can’t wait to see what’s to come from Closet Case Patterns in 2017 🙂

    • Thank you so much Elie! Lots of good things are coming (I think, hahaha!)

  • missceliespants

Merry Christmas, Heather! You inspire me every day.

    • Awww man, thank you! Can we please hang when I’m in Maryland in February?

      • missceliespants

Oh, sister. It’s been marked off on my calendar for the last three months. I’m happily underemployed and plan to be very annoying.

  • Merry Christmas Heather! Whenever I see your post coming into my box I put yours aside until I have some serious time to invest 🙂 but when I saw “year in review” I knew this was going to be SERIOUS. A cup of tea and ready to click through a bunch of great links….thank you for putting so much work into your blog. Happy New Year to you too – I can’t wait to see what you get up to next. Love your work, your inspirational posts…just a gushy fan hailing from Victoria BC 🙂

    • Aww thanks so much Kathleen! Hope you have a great year in one of my favourite Canadian cities! xoxo

  • Bravo, Heather! I’m so impressed with how you manage to kick ass on big stuff like launching video courses and small stuff like pocket designs.

  • Yarnho

Merry Xmas Heather! You are such an inspiration. I am a newbie to sewing. I would love to make a pair of Ginger Jeans. Do you have any suggestions for easier projects to tackle that would foster the techniques needed to be successful in creating The a Ginger Jeans?

    • Hi there! Sorry I didn’t reply sooner. Hmm. I think you could start with a simpler pair of pants (maybe the Carolyn pajama bottoms?) or maybe something with some topstitching details if you’d like to practice. But honestly? I have taught people who have never made a garment in their lives and they successfully made jeans. It’s really just about breaking it down step by step and taking your time. I will also have a special resource coming in February to help jeans construction even more 😉

  • Such a fine year, and so excited about the next (at least the sewing part) (which makes me much happier about 2017).
All the best to you and yours for every year.

  • Lynsey

Fab year for you, your patterns are awesome and I always look forward to seeing what’s next. Happy Christmas and New Year

    • Thank you Lynsey! All the best to you in 2017.

  • Caroline

I hope you had the happiest of holidays! I’ve always loved your blog and patterns, but everything over here really has been extra great this year (one thing 2016 has NOT been able to spoil!).

PS All I want for belated Christmas is a certain super awesome shirt dress pattern with a nifty hem…

    • Thanks Caroline! And your dreams will be answered sometime in the spring 😉

  • Belgian Seams

    Happy New Year, Heather!
I love reading your blog so much. The thought you put into all that you do really shines through.

All the best for 2017! Emily

    • Thank you so much Emily! Hope you have a wonderful 2017 too!

  • Carolyn Carr

Happy New Year Heather. I have made your Ginger jeans several times and each time I am blown away with your knowledge and your ability to convey your instructions. I finished your Morgan jeans last week and they are so comfortable. It was the first time that I made a button fly and it turned out perfectly. I finished your Carolyn pajamas a few hours ago and I am wearing them now. I said it before and I will say it again, I think you are a genius. If you ever make a jeans jacket pattern, I will be the first in line to buy it. I love your work!

    • Thank you so much for the kind words Carolyn! And a jean jacket is definitely on my to-do list 😉

      • Yarnho

Thank you Heather I will purchase the Carolyn PJs, but also the Ginger pattern!
